A Quiet Conversation About a Big Decision: Inside a Sheriff’s Meet & Greet in Quincy
The Signs Are Everywhere
By now, you’ve seen the signs. You can’t drive through the 98848 without spotting them; names staked into the ground, campaigns picking up momentum, and a sheriff’s race that’s starting to take shape whether we’re paying attention or not.
And if you’re being honest, you might be in the same place I was the last time this came around; trying to figure out who these guys even are. I’ll admit it, I didn’t really know the candidates in the last sheriff’s election. Not in any meaningful way.
That’s what made today different.
A Different Kind of Campaign Event
I walked into Crazylady Kitchen, a place I frequent. It’s part of my routine; coffee, conversations, the occasional Bible study. But today, the back room wasn’t just another casual gathering. It was a meet and greet for sheriff candidate Josh Sainsbury.
I didn’t quite know what to expect. If I’m honest, I had a picture in my head; something loud, polished, maybe even a little over the top like you see in movies. That’s not what this was.
What I walked into was simple. A couple tables, a handful of people, coffee cups, food and conversations. No stage, no speech, no performance. Just a man sitting down and talking with people.
The crowd stayed fairly small, even as more people came in, but that was part of what made it work. It felt natural. Sitting in a room I know well and watching something completely different unfold; no grandstanding, just real conversation.
Why This Matters
This wasn’t really about one candidate. It was a reminder of something bigger.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office serves all of us in the 98848; Quincy, George, Winchester, Crescent Bar, Sunland Estates. Decisions made at that level affect public safety, response times, rural coverage, and the overall trust people have in the system.
That’s everyday life for our community.
And yet, most of us don’t go to forums. Most of us don’t meet candidates. Most of us, at some point, have probably filled in a bubble without really knowing much about the race. I know I have.
The Value of Showing Up
That’s why something like this matters more than it looks on the surface. Sitting across from someone, looking them in the eye, asking a question; that tells you more in a few minutes than anything you’ll read in a pamphlet.
I’ve interviewed a lot of people over the years, and that face-to-face interaction matters. You pick up on things you just don’t get any other way.
Events like this are accessible. They’re local. They’re real.
A big thank you to Amy and the team at Crazylady Kitchen for opening their space and hosting something like this. These small, community-driven moments are where real understanding starts.
The Reality We All Face
Most people aren’t going to go out of their way to attend something like this. Life is busy. Work, family, and commitments take up most of our time.
But when it comes to a position like sheriff, can we afford not to be paying attention?
Quincy has its own police department, but across much of the 98848, it’s the sheriff’s office that people rely on day in and day out. Communities like Sunland Estates and Crescent Bar depend heavily on that coverage. It’s a large county with limited resources, and the person in that role matters.
Our Commitment to Coverage
Here’s my commitment to you. We’re going to cover this sheriff’s race from start to finish. No opinions, no endorsements, and no telling you who to vote for. Just information.
We’re already working on a series of interviews with all three candidates. Each one will answer the same 22 questions. No editing, no spin, and no commentary; just their answers in their own words so you can compare them directly.
Two of those interviews are already done, and we’re scheduling the third now. Once that’s complete, we’ll release all three together.
What This Means to You
This is your sheriff. Your community. Your choice.
You don’t really know a candidate until you’ve looked them in the eye and asked your question. So as more meet and greets, forums, and events come up, take advantage of them when you can.
Pay attention. Stay informed. Be part of it.
Because who sits in that chair at the sheriff’s office for the next four years is going to affect all of us here in the 98848, and it’s on us to make sure we get that decision right.
